Yahoo Rings the Changes !

With Terry Semel’s recent resignation and Yahoo’s original co-founder Jerry Yong’s return to the company as CEO, it is obvious that Yahoo will be gearing up to make some exciting and radical changes in the coming months.

Yahoo has always been criticised for playing second fiddle to Google but it is worth remembering that it was actually Yahoo that were the first to experiment in what was a new arena at the time. In fact they actually had the opportunity to buy Google at one point but let the opportunity pass them by. Who knows how things would have evolved if they had.

In those days Google would have had the benefit of watching from the side lines and learning from Yahoo’s experiences both good and bad. They then applied this knowledge, along with their own expertise in technology to create and develop their own services. They went from strength to strength gaining many acquisitions along the way and ultimately creating the vast empire and dominance of the search engine marketplace that they have today.

It does seem that Yahoo have also learned from its past experiences are now busy applying this knowledge to future projects. It has shown its dedication to Web 2.0 principles by acquiring such sites as Flickr, Oddpost, del.icio.us and Upcoming.org.

It is plain to see that Yahoo’s vision of the web in the years ahead will consist of users logging on to their favourite social networking sites, and then launching other applications and services from within that site. They may have missed out on acquiring social networking site Facebook but they did recently acquire Rivals.com, a sports community website, and this should give them a good basis for moving forward into this domain. They have also shown themselves as a key player in mobile technology so it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months.
