It's a Fact, the Internet is More Popular than TV!

A survey carried out on behalf of Google this year, found that internet users in the U.K spend an average of 164 minutes a day online as opposed to 148 minutes spent watching the television. It seems that we are evolving from a nation of couch potatoes into a nation of office chair enthusiasts.

Apparently men are the biggest users (no change there then!) with most spending an average of 172 minutes a day surfing the web. This compares to just 156 minutes spent by women (I’ve been told this is because they can do two things at once!) These figures were reported by the TNS Institute and involved questioning 1030 adults between the ages of 16 and 64.

The report found that the majority of the total time spent online was spent doing online shopping. It is also thought that the ever increasing use of the internet in the workplace as well as the large increase in the number of private homes that now have access to a broadband connection are the main reason for the internets domination.

Personally I think that the rising number of popular social networking sites is also a big contributor to the rising appeal of the web.

According to Ofcom, who have also been monitoring the situation, records show that there are now in excess of 10 million broadband connections in the U.K. They also report a slight drop in the size of T.V audiences since late 2003. All of this is worrying news for T.V broadcasters and no doubt this news will fuel the rush for internet T.V to improve its services.
