Blockbuster to Aquire Movie Download Service from Movielink

Blockbuster looks set to broaden its control over the movie rental marketplace with its announcement that it is to buy a movie downloading service from Movielink.

Blockbuster currently faces stiff competition from the likes of Amazon and Apple in the small but extremely competitive marketplace, so it is hoped that this acquisition will provide them with a boost.

They will soon be able to boast a large library of downloadable content alongside the 70,000 DVD’s that can also be hired.
Blockbuster will be keen to claim its share of a market which has seen earnings from movie downloads increase 100% from $11 million in 2005 to $111 last year.

According to Reuters, Movielink will operate independently but elements of its service will ultimately be made available on blockbuster.com.
