Britain deals online Gambling Firms a Blow
Britain’s Culture, Media and Sport Minister James Purnell announced today that a ban will be placed on online gambling sites to stop them from advertising in the UK. The ban will come into force from September this year.
The Government believes that the off-shore countries where many internet poker and casino websites are based, do not exercise strict enough control over the advertising of their sites. So, even though they have licenses to run their sites, they will not be able to advertise online, on television, in magazines or in papers anywhere in the UK.
This news will affect more than a thousand gambling websites who will no doubt try to protest about the new regulations. Well known firms among those who will be affected include Betford Casino and Littlewoodcasino.com.
Not all firms will be affected. Firms that are located in low-tax locations such as Gibraltar (where 888.com are based), the Isle of Man and Also Alldernay will be able to continue advertising.
The Minister said "I make no apology for banning adverts for websites operating from places that don't meet our strict standards".
