Google and Intel Go Green

During a recent press conference at Google headquarters, Urs Holzle senior vice president of operations at Google and Pat Gelsinger senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s digital Enterprise Group, announced a new environmental initiative to promote the adoption of energy efficient computers, components and power management tools.

"Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power, and the average server wastes one-third of its power," said Holzle.

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative, which licensed it's name from the WWF Climate Savers Program (a group involving several leading companies dedicated to working to reduce their carbon footprint), is seeking to reduce global computer based CO2 emissions by 54 million tons per year by 2010. This is the equivalent to the output from 11 million cars annually. The initiative is setting a new 90% efficiency target for power supplies which, if achieved, will significantly reduce green house gas emissions.

Many leading companies have already signed up for membership with The Climate Savers Computing Initiative including Dell, Microsoft, eBay and Hitachi, as well as Google and Intel of course.

Gelsinger admitted that consumers will pay more for the new energy efficient devices but the energy savings expected would off-set the extra costs within the first couple of years. The initial price hike is expected to decline once environmentally friendly PC’s and PC parts become part of the course world wide.

This news will be warmly welcomed for all environmentally conscious and will have a huge impact on efforts already being made towards a more energy efficient and greener world.
