Widgets Drive Traffic to Websites

The internet ratings site Quantcast has reported that some widget producer’s sites have seen dramatic increases in the level of traffic for their three most popular widgets on Facebook, HotorNot, Slide and Rockyou.

The widgets are helping to boost traffic to the sites originally responsible for producing them for use in social networking.

A widget, for those not in the know, is a little piece of content or tool designed and provided by a third party and used on bloggs, personal sites and profile pages. So many widgets are now in use in Facebook profiles, that the corresponding increase in traffic to the widget producer’s sites is being called the ‘Facebook Effect’.

Facebook alone has an audience of 30m users so this is an opportunity in waiting for many online marketers and developers.
