Google One Step Closer to an Open Network

A deal has been struck between Google and Sprint, who provide a wi-max service. Wi-max is a high speed wireless internet access technology which covers a greater distance than its cousin wi-fi.

The deal will benefit both parties as it will give Google access to the wireless world, which it has so far been struggling to gain access to. In return, Sprint will benefit from mobile advertising delivered by Google. This will help Sprint to offset the costs involved in preparing for the wi-max network roll out in 2008.

The deal also paves the way for an interesting allegiance when it seems that the rest of the telecommunication and internet companies are at loggerheads with each other over market dominance.

Google’s ultimate goal is to host an ‘Open Network’ which would enhance competition and benefit consumers, and it looks like the partnership between Google and Sprint is a link in the chain.
